Tigers Revamp Bullpen with Finnegan, Heuer, and Morton

The Detroit Tigers have been active in reshaping their bullpen leading up to the trade deadline. The acquisition of Kyle Finnegan, who has closing experience, addresses an immediate need. Finnegan, 33, has recorded 20 saves for the Nationals this season, with a 4.38 ERA in 40 appearances. While he may not be a high strikeout pitcher, he excels at limiting hard contact.

Codi Heuer, 29, offers potential and depth, reporting to Triple-A Toledo. Heuer has a 3.43 ERA in 35 games at Triple-A Round Rock. He has a 3.61 ERA in his MLB career, spanning 92⅓ innings. Heuer throws primarily a four-seam fastball (averaging 95.8 mph) and slider. He underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2022 and another elbow surgery in July 2023, making his return to the majors a significant point.

The addition of Charlie Morton provides veteran leadership and experience, despite his 5.42 ERA in 23 games with Baltimore this season.

The Tigers designated left-handed reliever Dietrich Enns for assignment to create a spot for Heuer on the 40-man roster. This signals a clear direction towards prioritizing bullpen depth and potential.
