Alex Ovechkin Nears NHL Goal Record: A Look at His Coachability and Iconic Moments

Former Capitals coach Todd Reirden recalls working with Ovechkin to expand his "office" on the power play beyond the top of the circle. As opponents adjusted to defend his one-timer, Ovechkin actively sought ways to counter, working with Reirden on shooting from different spots and angles. "He’s very, very coachable and wants to do anything to get better," Reirden noted.

He found Ovechkin receptive to "hard coaching," a trait Trotz called "very, very unique" for a player of his stature. Trotz observed Ovechkin's growth in preparation and focus during their time together, ultimately leading to the championship that had eluded the captain for so long.

Even as a 20-year-old rookie in January 2006, Ovechkin displayed the spectacular flair that would define his career. In a game against the Phoenix Coyotes—coached at the time by Wayne Gretzky himself—Ovechkin scored what is simply known as "The Goal." After being tripped and falling to the ice while driving to the net, Ovechkin, while sliding on his back and facing away from the goal, reached over his head with his stick and hooked the puck into the net.

Goalie Brian Boucher, the victim on the play, later called it "a badge of honor." Broadcaster Darren Pang described the arena's reaction as "complete applause, like complete appreciation." Even Gretzky, watching from the bench, reportedly nodded in acknowledgment, later quipping that Ovechkin's ability made him think, "S***, my record could be in trouble." It was an early, stunning glimpse of the goal-scoring prowess to come.

Now 39 and in his 20th NHL season, Ovechkin continues to defy age and expectations. His ability to score consistently, combined with his physical style and remarkable durability ("He's a guy that just doesn't stop," said former coach Peter Laviolette), has kept Gretzky's record within reach. As the number dwindles, the spotlight intensifies, but Ovechkin maintains his focus and characteristic enthusiasm. "It is what it is," Ovechkin said. "It's a fun time... Everybody's watching."
