US Pairs Figure Skating Shows Promise at 2026 Olympics

The performances of Kam/O'Shea and Chan/Howe mark a positive shift for U.S. pairs figure skating, which has struggled to achieve consistent success in recent decades. Kam and O'Shea, who teamed up in 2022, have quickly become one of the nation's top teams, contributing to the qualification of two pairs entries for the Olympics. Their lyrical program to k.d. lang's "Hallelujah," choreographed by Drew Meekins, showcased their skill and artistry.

Chan and Howe, who have been skating together since 2019, demonstrated their resilience by overcoming Howe's shoulder injury and other challenges. Their polished short program to "Nyah" by CH2 highlighted their strong connection and ability to execute under pressure. The fact that they are the largest contingent of skaters from the Skating Club of Boston to compete in the Olympics since 1992 underscores their dedication and the strength of their training program.

While a medal may be unlikely, their performance signals that the US pairs are indeed "only getting better," paving the way for future success and potentially inspiring a new generation of skaters.

Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea scored 71.87, while Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe scored 70.06.

At 35, O'Shea is the oldest U.S. Olympic pairs skater since 1932 and the oldest figure skater from any country to make an Olympic debut since 1948.

Howe battled a shoulder injury, requiring surgery in May 2023. The team also faced a compressed training schedule due to Howe's basic training.
