Mexico World Cup Security Concerns

Following the death of a leader from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), violence has spread across multiple regions in Mexico, raising concerns about the country's ability to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup safely. Despite the unrest, FIFA and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) are collaborating to ensure the safety of players and fans during the tournament. FIFA stated they are closely monitoring the situation and are in constant communication with the authorities. A friendly match between Mexico and Iceland is still scheduled to proceed in Queretaro, with assurances of safety from the FMF. However, security experts warn that prolonged cartel conflict could compromise security during the tournament. The German FA chief has expressed concerns about the violence in Guadalajara, one of the host cities. The US government has advised Americans in Jalisco to shelter indoors until further notice, while Canada has cancelled flights to Puerto Vallarta airport. Monica Serrano Carreto, professor of international relations at El Colegio de Mexico, noted that the type of weapons that the cartel has access to means that a military-style confrontation in the aftermath is inevitable, and the government would have known that.

As of now, there is no indication that Mexico will lose the rights to host the World Cup. FIFA is monitoring the situation closely.
