Apple Digital ID: Carry Your Passport on Your iPhone

Apple’s Digital ID simplifies domestic travel by allowing users to store a digital version of their U.S. passport in Apple Wallet. To add a Digital ID, users scan their passport’s photo page and the chip embedded on the back, followed by a selfie and facial movements for verification. This data is encrypted and stored securely on the device.

Presenting the Digital ID is similar to using Apple Pay; double-click the side or Home button to access Wallet, select Digital ID, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. Only the necessary information for verification is shared, and Apple cannot see when or where the ID is presented.

While currently limited to TSA checkpoints and domestic travel, Apple plans to expand Digital ID acceptance to businesses and organizations for age and identity verification, both in-person and online, using the Verify with Wallet API.

Currently, 12 states and Puerto Rico support adding driver's licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet, with Japan also supporting My Number Card on iPhone. Digital ID extends this functionality by allowing passport usage regardless of state support for digital driver's licenses.
