Avelo Airlines Launches New Flights Between Portland and New Haven

Avelo Airlines' new route between Portland and New Haven represents a strategic expansion into the Northeast market. The airline will utilize Boeing 737-700 aircraft, offering 149 economy seats on the route. This service operates twice a week, specifically on Sundays and Thursdays, until August 31st.

PWM Airport Director Paul Bradbury welcomes Avelo as the ninth carrier at the airport, emphasizing the importance of expanding Portland's connectivity. This route is the shortest from PWM, covering only 210 miles with an approximate flying time of one hour.

However, Avelo's recent decision to partner with the Department of Homeland Security for deportation flights has sparked controversy. Critics argue that this move contradicts New Haven's values, potentially leading to boycotts and governmental restrictions. The airline has also canceled several routes in 2025, indicating some instability in its route network. These cancellations are attributed to competitive pressures and the reallocation of aircraft for deportation flights.

Despite these challenges, Avelo CEO Andrew Levy remains optimistic about the new Portland route, highlighting its potential to boost tourism and economic activity in both regions.
