Dollywood Celebrates 40 Years of Appalachian Magic

Dollywood's history began in 1961 as Rebel Railroad, a Wild West-themed park featuring a coal-fired steam train. It transformed into Goldrush Junction and later Silver Dollar City, emphasizing Appalachian crafts. In 1986, Dolly Parton partnered with the Herschend brothers to create Dollywood, which quickly became a success, increasing attendance by 75% in its first year.

Today, Dollywood balances thrilling rides like the Wild Eagle roller coaster with cultural experiences like the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary and the Songteller museum, which features Dolly's costumes and memorabilia. The park hosts seasonal events, including the Harvest Festival with thousands of jack-o-lanterns and a Christmas celebration with millions of lights. Dollywood continues to add new attractions while preserving its classic elements, such as the replica of Dolly's childhood cabin and the 1940s steam engine.

For its 40th anniversary, Dollywood is opening a dedicated Imagination Playhouse and premiering a new show called 'Play On.' Dolly Parton is also releasing an album of songs composed for the park and launching an iHeartRadio channel. A new Dollywood sign, inspired by the Hollywood sign, is expected to be a popular Instagram spot.

Dollywood officially opened on May 3, 1986.

Dollywood attracts approximately 3.8 million visitors annually.

Classic attractions include the Smoky Mountain River Rampage, Aunt Granny’s Restaurant, the Back Porch Theater, Craftsman’s Valley, and the Robert F. Thomas Chapel.
