Cruise Ship Outbreak Exposes Shetland Town to Health Crisis

The Costa Favolosa, operated by Carnival Corporation-owned Costa Cruises, experienced an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness during its May 15-22 voyage. Despite reports of passengers exhibiting symptoms, nearly 3,000 individuals were allowed to disembark in Lerwick, a town with a population of approximately 7,500. This lack of warning left local businesses unprepared, with some expressing concerns about potential contagion and a "complete disregard for the local community’s safety."

Local tour operators, such as R. Robertson and Son bus company, cancelled excursions after witnessing passengers becoming violently ill. The Lerwick Port Authority stated that while vessels are required to declare any concerns regarding passenger health, they were not notified of the outbreak. Similarly, NHS Shetland reported receiving notification of the illness only late in the afternoon of the ship’s arrival. Costa Cruises maintains that they were permitted to dock and implemented enhanced disinfection measures.

This incident follows previous controversies involving Costa Cruises, including the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster and a COVID-19 outbreak on the Costa Favolosa in 2020. Shetland, along with the Orkney Islands, is a popular cruise destination, receiving around 130,000 cruise ship passengers annually. The Lerwick Port Authority has pledged to tighten procedures to ensure proper documentation and timely communication in the future.
