'Mating Season' Review: Netflix Animated Series Is No 'Big Mouth'

'Mating Season' attempts to apply the 'Big Mouth' formula to the animal kingdom, but it doesn't quite land. While it shares the same crass humor and fast-paced delivery, the series fails to distinguish itself from typical rom-com cliches. The jokes often feel like 'Big Mouth' with an animal filter, lacking the originality and purpose that made the original series so impactful. The show knows how to get laughs. Raphael nails every line delivery, Woods gets to unleash his wild side from time to time, and Jalees helps make her put-upon fox endearing and entertaining. Kroll is still having a blast dropping foul one-liners, and the stacked cast of guest stars finds memorable opportunities for Clancy Brown, Drew Tarver, Maria Bamford, Pamela Adlon, and Timothy Olyphant, among others. Josh’s seasonal arc becomes finding a new mate before the next hibernation, but the episodic stories soon settle into all-too-familiar rom-com cliches, without enough contrast from the animal’s POV to provide much enlightenment for the human audience.

While it has its moments, 'Mating Season' doesn't reach the same level of depth or originality as 'Big Mouth.'
