Tropical Storm Erick Threatens Mexico as Heat Wave Intensifies in US

Tropical Storm Erick, previously identified as Potential Tropical Cyclone Five-E, is currently moving towards the coast of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts that Erick will intensify rapidly and make landfall between Oaxaca and Guerrero states. Residents are urged to monitor updates and prepare for potential impacts, including power outages and mudslides.

Meanwhile, a strong heat wave is expected to develop across the East and Midwest of the United States later this week and into next week. Several major cities are predicted to experience temperatures near or above 100°F (38°C). This level of heat poses a significant health risk, especially for vulnerable populations. The last time New York City and Philadelphia reached 100 degrees was in July 2012. Detroit could reach 98 degrees, a mark not seen since 2016.

In addition to these events, severe thunderstorms and flooding continue to plague parts of the central and eastern US. West Virginia is still recovering from deadly flash floods, while Kansas and Oklahoma experienced severe squall lines with high winds and heavy rain.

Erick is expected to make landfall on the coast of Mexico between Oaxaca and Guerrero states.

The NHC forecasts that Erick could be a Category 2 or 3 hurricane at landfall.

The heat wave will primarily affect the Eastern and Central US, including major cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
