Maryland Weather Update: Storms Followed by Impending Heatwave

Thursday's storms developed in the afternoon, bringing heavy rain and strong wind gusts to much of Maryland. The Baltimore metro area experienced wind gusts exceeding 55 mph, and some areas received over an inch of rain in a single hour. The storms led to flight groundings at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and suspended MARC Camden Line service due to downed trees.

Following the storms, a cold front is expected to bring cooler and less humid air on Friday. However, this relief will be short-lived as a significant heatwave is predicted to begin on Saturday. The hottest period is expected from Sunday through Wednesday, with high temperatures ranging from 95-100°F and heat indices potentially reaching 110°F. High pressure will suppress shower and storm development during this time.

The Baltimore area, Annapolis, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Eastern Shore experienced the brunt of the severe weather.
