Severe Storms Threaten Iowa with Damaging Winds and Heavy Rain

A line of strong thunderstorms is currently moving through Iowa, posing a significant threat to residents. The storms are expected to continue eastward, with the most intense activity predicted for the northern half of the state. Wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph are possible, and some areas have already experienced gusts up to 90 mph. The storm front is expected to reach the Interstate 35 corridor around midnight and exit central Iowa by 4 AM Tuesday. Following the initial storms, there is a chance of additional showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday night and Wednesday, accompanied by heavy rain. Temperatures will cool down by Wednesday, with highs in the 70s expected for the remainder of the week.

The primary threats are damaging winds, heavy rain, isolated large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes.

Numerous counties in central, north-central, northeast, and west-central Iowa are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 4 AM CDT Tuesday.

Most areas can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain, with some locations potentially receiving up to 4 inches.
