Atlantic Hurricane Season: Storm Threatens July 4th Weekend

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a system that could develop into a tropical or subtropical depression near Florida and the Southeast coast. Regardless of its official designation, the system is expected to bring significant rainfall and gusty winds to the region. The initial impact will be felt in Florida, including cities like Tampa, Orlando, and Miami, before spreading to the coastal Carolinas over the weekend.

Localized flash flooding is possible due to persistent thunderstorms. Beachgoers should be aware of potential rip currents and lightning. While the Southeast braces for stormy weather, the Northeast and West coasts are expected to enjoy calm and clear skies.

As of Thursday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center gives the system a 60% chance of forming into a tropical depression or tropical storm.

Initially, Florida will be most affected, with the threat shifting to the Carolina coast Saturday into Sunday.

Localized downpours, rip currents, and rough seas are still expected.
