The Grand National festival returns to Aintree from 3–5 April 2025, culminating in the world-famous steeplechase on Saturday, 5th April at 16:00 BST. With over 150,000 attendees expected, planning your travel and being aware of security mea...
## Getting to Aintree
Navigating your way to the Grand National requires some planning, especially with the large crowds anticipated.
**By Rail:** Merseyrail offers the most direct route, with trains running every 7.5 minutes between Liverpool Central/Moorfields and Aintree stations during peak arrival (approx. 10:00–13:00) and departure (approx. 16:30–20:30) times. Note that increased Aintree services mean adjustments on other Northern Line branches: reduced services on the Ormskirk branch, amended 15-min timetable on the Southport branch, and some Headbolt Lane services terminating at Sandhills (requiring a change).
**By Bus:** Regular services (300, 310, 345) operate between Queen Square bus station and Aintree. Additionally, Stagecoach provides a dedicated shuttle bus from Elliot Street [Stop GE] in Liverpool city centre to the racecourse. Return shuttles depart from Park Lane (opposite Aintree station) on Friday and Saturday only.
**By Car:** Aintree Racecourse is on the A59. Follow tourism signs. However, driving is discouraged due to expected heavy traffic and road closures. Ormskirk Road and a section of Park Lane will close from 15:00–21:00 daily. Melling Road will also be closed near Seeds Lane. **Crucially, all car parking must be pre-booked.**
## Security Measures
Following disruptions in previous years, including protests in 2023 and historical bomb scares (1997), Merseyside Police are implementing a comprehensive security plan often referred to as a 'ring of steel'.
