The crash occurred around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025, on U.S. Highway 20 near Henrys Lake State Park, approximately 16 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. According to reports, a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling west collided with a Mercedes passenger van traveling east toward Yellowstone. Both vehicles ignited after the collision.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find both vehicles engulfed in flames. Despite the efforts of first responders and bystanders, seven people were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, including Idaho Falls and Bozeman, Montana.
The Idaho Transportation Department has identified this section of Highway 20 for safety improvements, acknowledging the high traffic volume and potential for severe crashes. In 2023, the average daily traffic on this portion of the highway was approximately 10,500 vehicles.
