After multiple failed attempts, ancestral properties in Maharashtra linked to Dawood Ibrahim have been successfully auctioned. A Mumbai-based buyer has acquired several plots, signaling progress in the government's efforts to seize assets t...
The auction of these properties marks a significant step in the government's ongoing efforts to dismantle illicit wealth and reclaim assets linked to criminal activities. The properties, located in Mumbake village, Ratnagiri, had been seized under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act (SAFEMA).
Previous attempts to auction the land were unsuccessful due to concerns over the association with Dawood Ibrahim and the D-Company, as well as the remote location and limited agricultural use of the land. Despite reducing reserve prices, no bidders emerged until this year.
In early 2024, Ajay Srivastava, a Delhi-based lawyer, acquired Dawood Ibrahim’s ancestral bungalow and planned to establish a trust there. He also bid on other plots but failed to complete the payments, leading to re-auctions.
The successful bidders are required to deposit the full payment by April 2026, after which the ownership will be legally transferred, pending approval from the competent authority.
Potential buyers were deterred by the association with Dawood Ibrahim, the remote location of the land, and its limited agricultural use.
Dawood Ibrahim is the head of the D-Company syndicate and is wanted in India for masterminding the 1993 Mumbai bombings.
