A coalition of media freedom organizations, including the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), conducted a mission to Pristina and found that while Kosovo has a pluralistic media landscape, several media freedom standards have been undermined. The delegation noted that a media law, later rejected as unconstitutional, would have increased political control over the Independent Media Commission (IMC). Additionally, there are concerns about insufficient funding and political pressure on Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK). The delegation also raised concerns about the increasing verbal targeting and denigration of journalists by ruling party politicians. Ricardo Gutierrez from the Federation of European Journalists stated that Prime Minister Kurti did not recognize the hostile climate towards journalists and even justified it. James Wiseman from the International Press Institute expressed concern about the direction media freedom is taking in Kosovo, noting the level of mistrust and polarization between the government and the media community. To address these issues, the delegation called on the government to prioritize aligning domestic legislation with Article 6 of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and to amend the legislative agenda to include the Law on Radio Television of Kosovo and Law on Protection of Journalistic Sources, in line with the EMFA and Kosovo’s objective to enter the EU.
