Stellantis has issued a recall for approximately 320,000 Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid vehicles due to the risk of battery fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises owners to park their vehi...
The recall, initiated on October 30 and announced by NHTSA on November 4, stems from a defect in the battery packs of affected Jeep hybrid models. Specifically, some battery packs may contain cells with separator damage. The separator, a crucial component within a battery, prevents direct contact between the anode and cathode. Damage to this separator can lead to short circuits and, consequently, fires.
Stellantis is currently developing a remedy for the issue. In the meantime, owners are strongly advised to adhere to NHTSA's recommendations to park their vehicles outdoors and avoid charging them. Charging increases the risk of fire due to the elevated energy levels in the battery.
This isn't the first time Stellantis has faced this problem. In September 2024, a similar recall was issued for over 150,000 hybrid Jeeps, with a software update as the proposed solution. However, the recurrence of fires post-update indicates that the software fix was inadequate.
Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting the NHTSA website and using the VIN search function (recall number 25V-741), which will be available starting November 6.
