Northampton Saints Roar Back Against Clermont In Champions Cup Clash

The Investec Champions Cup last-16 tie at Franklin's Gardens began with Clermont applying intense early pressure. The visitors looked dominant, employing a physical, direct style that saw them race to a 10-0 lead, courtesy of a try from centre George Moala and a penalty kicked by fly-half Anthony Belleau. Northampton appeared "shell-shocked" in the opening 15 minutes, struggling to gain possession or territory.

However, the momentum began to shift. Fly-half Fin Smith slotted a penalty in the 15th minute to reduce the arrears to 3-10. Five minutes later, the England international finished off a move initiated by scrum-half Alex Mitchell, scoring near the posts and adding the conversion to tie the game at 10-10.

The Saints, buoyed by the scoreline and finding their attacking rhythm, struck again quickly. After a stunning try-saving tap-tackle by Mitchell denied Clermont's Bautista Delguy at one end, Saints worked the ball wide for Tommy Freeman to score in the corner (24 mins), making it 15-10.

Freeman wasn't finished, grabbing his second try around the 32-minute mark after Saints capitalised on a loose Clermont lineout, extending the lead to 20-10. Clermont's woes were compounded when lock Thomas Ceyte was sin-binned for repeated offside infringements shortly after. Northampton nearly added a fourth try through Mitchell just before the break, but it was disallowed for a knock-on following a TMO review.
