Ford Recalls 123K Vehicles in US Over Brake Issue

Ford Motor Company has initiated a recall affecting 123,611 vehicles in the United States to rectify a brake issue. The recall, detailed in a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 11, indicates a potential for "substantial loss of brake fluid." This loss could compromise the functionality of the front wheel brakes, thereby escalating the risk of a collision.

The recall encompasses specific 2017-2018 Ford F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator models, all of which are equipped with 3.5L EcoBoost engines. According to the recall report, the brake master cylinder in these vehicles may allow brake fluid to leak from the front wheel circuit into the brake booster.

Investigation of returned parts revealed that brake fluid contamination could interfere with the rear cup seal function or cause the rearmost cup seal in the master cylinder to roll, leading to the brake fluid leak. Ford has stated that they are currently unaware of any accidents, injuries, or fires connected to this issue.

If the problem arises, the NHTSA said that drivers will be alerted through an audible chime, a message center alert, and a red brake warning indicator. Additionally, drivers might experience a change in brake pedal feel and increased pedal effort if they continue to operate the vehicle.

Owners will receive notification letters by mail, instructing them to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The brake master cylinder will be replaced at no cost to the owner. If the brake master cylinder is leaking, the brake booster will also be replaced.
