Youth and Family Outreach (YFO) has a long history of addressing community needs in Portland, Maine. Founded in 1844, the organization has evolved from a community outreach mission to providing early care and education since 1986. The decision to expand was driven by the need to serve more children and families. The purchase of the neighboring Maria’s Restaurant property in 2018 presented an opportunity to not only expand programming but also address the growing need for affordable housing in downtown Portland. While the original plan involved reutilizing Preble Chapel, the building’s limitations made it infeasible for creating a safe and sustainable environment for children. This led to the decision to construct a new building that meets the current and future needs of the community. The project has received renewed partnerships and approval from the City of Portland, marking a significant step forward for YFO.
