On Saturday, May 3, 2025, Jeffrey Scott Duffie and Brady Smith were part of a crew from Utility Line Construction Services working to restore power in Birmingham following overnight storms. While trimming limbs, a tree uprooted and fell, striking both men. Duffie was pronounced dead at the scene, while Smith was rushed to UAB Hospital for emergency surgery.

The accident took place on 21st Avenue South, an area known as Diaper Row. Smith's cousin, Mary Campbell, described the incident as a 'freak accident.' Smith is expected to survive but faces a long recovery at Spain Rehabilitation Center. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Smith and his wife, who are expecting a child, with their mounting expenses.
