Lightning Strike Kills Man, Injures Several Others in New Jersey

On July 17, 2025, a severe lightning strike occurred at the Black Knight Bow Benders archery range in Jackson Township, New Jersey. The incident took place around 7 p.m., impacting members of Jackson Cub Scout Pack 204 who were attending an event at the range. Robert Montgomery, a 61-year-old member of the archery range, was killed. Fourteen others sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals, including Jersey Shore University Medical Center and the Livingston Burn Center.

Eyewitness accounts describe a sudden, powerful strike accompanied by a loud bang and flying dirt, despite the absence of rain at the time. Gene Grodzki, a club member and spokesman for Black Knight Bow Benders, recounted how the lightning hit a tree, throwing a 240-pound man against it and causing multiple people to fall to the ground.

Mayor Michael Reina praised the rapid response of emergency responders, who successfully administered CPR to at least one victim. He also noted the support offered by Governor Phil Murphy and officials from neighboring Lakewood Township.
