Illinois Attorney General Challenges Ameren Gas Hike, Alleging $43.7 Million Overcharge

Ameren Illinois has proposed a gas rate hike that could significantly impact residents' bills. Attorney General Raoul's office has challenged the proposal, asserting that Ameren's 'Blanket Project' budgets lack transparency and proper justification. The AG is asking the ICC to cut $43.7 million from Ameren's request, representing more than a third of the total rate hike.

Consumer advocates, like the Citizens Utility Board, are raising concerns about the cumulative effect of multiple rate increases over the past seven years, which they say are making gas prices unaffordable for many Illinois residents. Ameren defends the proposed increase, stating it is necessary to maintain infrastructure, meet federal safety requirements, reduce leaks, and ensure reliable service. The ICC will weigh these arguments before issuing its final ruling.

An opinion submitted to the ICC by administrative law judges advises the ICC to trim $43.7 million from Ameren’s rate hike request. Citizen’s Utility Board Jim Chilsen says this would be the fourth rate increase in the last seven years.

Ameren initially asked for a $131.1 million rate-hike but recently revised it downward to $128.8 million.

The Attorney General argues that Ameren's project budgets are poorly defined, overstate costs, and act as placeholders.

The ICC is required to issue a ruling by December 1st.
