Remembering Alison Parker and Adam Ward 10 Years Later

Alison Parker, a James Madison University alumna and former reporter, is remembered by her colleagues at JMU's School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD). Brad Jenkins, the general manager and adviser for The Breeze, JMU’s student-run news organization, shares memories of Parker's “fierce journalistic ability” and her “sweet, kind personality.” The Alison B. Parker Studio at JMU and a memorial scholarship in her name serve as lasting tributes.

Adam Ward, a former Salem High School student, is remembered for his humor and love of sports. Grant Smythers, his former teacher, recalls Ward's kind heart and playful nature. The Adam Ward Classic basketball tournament raises scholarship money for students, embodying Ward's spirit of hard work and integrity. Over the past nine years, around $90,000 in scholarships has been awarded to students in his honor.

Kate Debord McMillan, a scholarship recipient, shares her personal connection to Parker and Ward, highlighting their joy and dedication. She now works in healthcare, inspired by her desire to make a difference, a goal supported by the Adam Ward Scholarship. The 2026 Adam Ward Classic will take place on February 6 and 7 at Salem High School.
