Spokane ICE Protest Leads to Detentions and State of Emergency

Spokane witnessed a contentious protest outside the ICE facility at 411 West Cataldo, as residents voiced their opposition to ICE deportations. The demonstration was sparked by the detention of a young man from Venezuela who had applied for asylum. Former city councilman Ben Stuckart, who has taken legal guardianship of the individual, organized the protest, which drew additional support from a second group marching from downtown Spokane.

The situation escalated when protesters blocked a bus they believed was intended to transport detainees to the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma. According to reports, law enforcement officials warned protesters that they were obstructing federal operations and could face arrest. The tensions culminated in police using tear gas to disperse the crowd, resulting in several detentions.

Mayor Lisa Brown issued a statement acknowledging the situation and affirming the city’s commitment to upholding First Amendment rights while also addressing violations of the Spokane Municipal Code. She emphasized the importance of remaining peaceful and safe, expressing sympathy for families being separated.

In response to the escalating situation, Mayor Brown declared a state of emergency, implementing a curfew for downtown Spokane from 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The curfew applies to the area from Boone Ave to Spokane Falls Blvd and Howard St to Division St, including Riverfront Park. Exceptions were made for first responders, individuals leaving the soccer game at the Podium, residents of the area, those traveling to and from work, and media personnel.
